Joachim Sauer married Angela Dorothea Merkel, the former German Chancellor, in 1998. They met in 1981 while both were working at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin. At the time, Merkel was still known as Angela Kasner, having taken the name of her first husband, Ulrich Merkel.
